Getting the Bank to Say “Yes” – with Business Diagnostics

LEVEL Intermediate

OBJECTIVE
This seminar will help CAs to find approaches that will enable them to assist clients and their organizations in obtaining financing opportunities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
CAs in public practice and in industry will benefit from this seminar where they are looking for an approach that will enable them to assist clients and their organizations with financing applications.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
• craft a comprehensive ‘size up’ of an existing business operation, pinpointing external opportunities and threats, internal strengths and weaknesses
• understand ‘diagnostic checks’ required to ensure a satisfactory degree of corporate health and staying power
• build stronger and more trusting relationships by assisting their clients with effective applications for financing
(addressing key risk concerns from the perspective of a commercial lender and an equity investor).

CONTENT
Participants will be introduced to a comprehensive assessment framework containing effective diagnostic skills. A comprehensive case study is used to illustrate a cross-section of real-life business situations throughout the day.

Participants will evaluate external business conditions - a firm’s specific health relative to its industry environment and the key success factors for the business; and complete an internal assessment of finance, marketing, operations, human resources and technology. Participants will be introduced to the Optimist financial analysis software, now being used by a number of banks as part of their risk assessment process.

In the afternoon, participants are introduced to the Enterprise Review Summary (ERS), a 5-6 page tactical document in the afternoon. This is followed by a review of the key elements of commercial bank financing. The ERS is completed by a CA in conjunction with the client and presented to the bank along with the client’s annual financial statements.

COMMENTS FROM PAST PARTICIPANTS

NOTE
This seminar is based on the “Business Diagnostics” publication, 2nd Edition 2007, written by Richard Mimick and Michael Thompson.
