Introduction to Risk Management - a business perspective

Risk has been the mainspring of commerce for centuries. Managing risk to achieve economic gain and avoid economic loss is just as essential for corporate CEOs in the 21st century as it was for Venetian merchants in the 15th century. In an increasingly competitive and complex world, effective management of risk in the face of uncertainty has become a vital skill, essential for a significant cross-section within any business.

Introduction to Risk Management lays the foundation for an understanding of business risk. It examines the topic of risk, places it in an historical context, viewing it from the perspective of business, and taking a long, hard look at how corporate-wide risk management is faring today, and what can be done to improve it.

This 60-minute course is applicable to all who wish to develop a solid foundation for understanding business risk or to those who would like to refresh their existing knowledge by going “back to the basics.”

Early Warning Signals - Business Diagnostics FastTrack course released

In response to feedback on our 7-module course, Business Diagnostics Online, we are introducing two new courses: Business Diagnostics FastTrack and the Business Diagnostics Reference Series.

FastTrack takes the learner through key aspects of the Business Diagnostics approach. Included with this new single-module course are the Size-Up Grids, eBook and the Enterprise Review Summary.

FastTrack follows the story of John Marston of Marston Control Devices, Inc., a real-life case study, as he learns how to develop an objective assessment of his business and succeed in obtaining realistic funding for his expansion plans with the help of his cousin, a former commercial banker.

FastTrack provides between 60 to 90 minutes of online training.

• The Reference Series contains in-depth guidance on the key areas covered by the single-module FastTrack course. The Reference Series provides a detailed background to the completion of Size-Up Grids, the eBook and the Enterprise Review Summary.

The Reference Series contains five modules:

1. External Business Environment Reviews;
2. Internal Business Environment Reviews (HR and Operations);
3. Internal Business Environment Reviews (Marketing and Finance);
4. Strategic Direction Reviews;
5. Risk Assessments from a Banker’s perspective.

The Reference Series also follows the story of John Marston of Marston Control Devices, Inc. and provides up to five hours of training. The decision to register for this course can be made either before or after taking FastTrack.

For 2008, the original Business Diagnostics Online seven-module course has been renamed Business Diagnostics Online Comprehensive to differentiate it from the two new additions. The Comprehensive course continues to provide up to seven hours of online training.

Mike Thompson, co-author of the "Business Diagnostics" publication and highly popular instructor in the "Business Diagnostics - Getting the Bank to Say 'Yes'" course, achieved a very respectable 95.3% evaluation at the latest offering in Toronto yesterday. Feedback from the participants included:

  • "The model introduced is very helpful to consider when working with bank financing"
  • "Updated my knowledge of how the current loan application works and the type of information the banks require"
  • "Case study part excellent"
  • "Will be helpful to advise clients and do further reading"
  • "Instructor had a great ability to lead meaningful related discussions"
  • Overall the course provided a “practical” approach to business diagnostics and strategic planning"

    Before heading off for a well-earned cruise, Mike drew attention to the 2008 plans for bringing the present classroom offering and the new Business Diagnostics Online course closer together: "One will complement the other, creating an exciting synergy as we continue to focus more on case study-driven training."
