The Ethical Dilemma
CPA partners fined $100,000 each and forced to pay $471,000 in costs; a city treasurer in the US quietly embezzling $53 million in total, leaving municipal projects unfinished through lack of funds; CPAs throughout Canada fined and expelled after complaints.
What did these situations have in common? Each of the individuals concerned succumbed to ethical lapses, failing themselves and others. |
CPAs in today’s increasingly complex business world face ethical dilemmas frequently. They may be tempted to rationalize or even ignore ethical issues. In ethically challenging circumstances, they still have to act professionally. By failing to do so, they can cause harm to others, and to themselves, compromising their future professional lives.
This 4.5 hour online course provides learners with the opportunity to see themselves in a new light. Established ethical principles define each person as a professional. Supported by recent research, learners will see why they may act the way they do. By understanding what can trigger ethical lapses, they can learn how to deal with ethical dilemmas successfully.
The current version of The Ethical Dilemma includes 48 case studies, based on actual disciplinary hearings and findings. These illustrate how a few CPAs did not meet the ethical principles adopted by the profession, and what happened as a result.
But it’s not all bad.
Faced with ethical dilemmas, CPAs will need to know how to reach an ethical resolution, how to present ethical alternatives to others and how to protect themselves from being compromised. Also introduced in this course are external ethical solutions, such as whistleblowing and the forward-looking role of ethical safeguards.
In The Ethical Dilemma, learners will experience how the correct ethical choices can help them find fulfilment in their chosen profession.
Developed for use in Alberta, this course can be repurposed for other provinces.
